Sherbourne Health’s Support Our Youth (SOY) is a safe space that creates opportunities for LGBTQ* (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, and the entire spectrum of gender and sexuality outside of heterosexual) youth and adults to build an inclusive, welcoming community together. SOY develops and implements initiatives that build skills and capacities, provides mentoring and support, and nurtures a sense of identity and belonging amongst LGBTQ* youth. SOY is a program of the Sherbourne Health Centre.
Sonny Berenson is a trans-identified community facilitator and artist. He has developed and facilitated numerous programs that integrate the arts, self-expression, and self-care for LGBTQ* youth. SOY was awarded this grant to support Sonny’s training at the Toronto Institute of Relational Psychotherapy (TIRP) to gain the skills needed to become a Relational Psychotherapist. This training will provide Sonny with skills to successfully implement more holistic mental health and self-care supports for trans clients at SOY, as well as implement a new program that works with family members of trans youth.
