Our family set up our foundation in December 2023 as part of a personal philanthropic plan and direct partnership with the Toronto Foundation.
What does the Malcolm Family Foundation do?
Our foundation is primarily designed to service two areas of need in Toronto: arts and culture and social justice for marginalized groups within our City. As a former arts worker, Adam Malcolm understands personally the disparity that exists between arts and culture workers and many other fields by way of opportunity, compensation, and investment. Arts and culture not only provides us with a reason to live and thrive in the world, but also has proven and peer-reviewed economic benefits – many of which do not often get passed down to the artists who create the art we love.
In a wider context, our world has never been more divided between those who have plenty and those who do not have enough to survive – with marginalized, BIPOC, and economically disadvantaged populations being underrepresented at every level of the power structures that exist in our society.
Combining these two causes, our current priority is to provide grants to qualified donees who provide opportunity for BIPOC and marginalized arts workers to create art without the need to worry about monetizing their art or creating art for the sake of appeasing power structures or providing justification for the “purpose” of their art. We believe in a high level of trust that, when we make a grant to a donee, it is done with the understanding they know best how to use those grants.
The Foundation aims to provide direct counterbalance to the scales of justice that have been weighted against the Arts, as well as marginalized peoples’ of all kinds. Ultimately, we work towards a future in which our Foundation is not necessary. Should you wish to help us in this endeavour, you may make a one-time or recurring donation at the link below.
To enable the Donor Advisor to properly recognize donors for their contributions, Toronto Foundation will share your contact information and donation amount with the Donor Advisor unless you have checked the anonymous box on the donation form.
