Wigwamen
Established in 1972, Wigwamen owns and operates more than 875 units in 137 locations across Torontoāmaking them Ontarioās largest urban Indigenous housing provider. Beyond providing deeply affordable housing, Wigwamen believes in creating supportive communities where Indigenous families, seniors, and single individuals can thrive and grow. Staff support tenants through all stages of life: from running scholarships for young people pursuing a postsecondary education, to providing baby baskets for those who are expecting, to hosting celebratory events in each buildingās communal spaces.Ā In recognition of its work, Wigwamen was awarded the Ontario Non-Profit Housing Associationās āBest Practices in Affordable Housingā award.
Wigwamen also maintains the waiting list for New Frontiers Aboriginal Residential Corporation, an Indigenous nonprofit housing corporation which owns and operates an additional 87 units at its site on Coxwell Avenue.
Weāre always in development mode and will soon open another 60+ units in Scarborough, but our waitlist has ballooned to 600 Indigenous households. That list keeps growing with folks leaving reserves looking for better opportunities.
